During the earthquakes that struck Nepal in 2015, anonymized network data from TeliaSonera subsidiary Ncell was analyzed by Flowminder to provide information on people displacement. This information, which became part of the regular UN updates to aid organizations, was critical in ensuring that relief efforts were directed to the right regions.

鈥淎 brilliant example of how the application of big data analysis to mobile technologies can be used to accelerate emergency aid, and provide intelligence to help prepare for future disasters鈥, according to the Judges' comments

About the analytical work

The analytical work was coordinated through the non-profit organization Flowminder and disseminated through the WorldPop project, a leading open access platform for global demographic data that can be used to help tackle major development challenges and emergency response situations.
