Motivation
The student project "Reducing COâ‚‚ from Customer Shopping Journeys” is awarded Best Company Project in the Applied Retail Track 2025.
Addressing the critical question of how brick-and-mortar retailers can cut emissions from shoppers’ trips to and from stores, the authors combine an ambitious and thorough literature review with interviews across the retail sector. The authors identify four areas for reducing consumer transport-related COâ‚‚ and evaluates each in a thoughtful and mature way, showing that all actions have positive and negative effects that have to be balanced. They also show that geography plays an important role for the effects of various actions. Building on these insights, the authors propose a framework for choosing between action alternatives. This framework has high practical value and can be used not only by Systembolaget, but also by other brick and mortar retailers. The report also shows that meaningful reductions of COâ‚‚ emissions from customer transports require long-term commitment rather than simplistic “one-shot” solutions - an insight that is both academically grounded and highly actionable.
About the Company Project
The purpose of the project is to create value for the company and for the students in the Retail Management program. The company may use the project to get information related to an important issue. It gives the company an opportunity to also get a deeper understanding of student competencies and to identify talent as future employees. The students get relevant experience in planning, executing, and presenting a project, an opportunity to bridge theory and practice and (potentially) insight into one aspect of the company's business.
