Martin Carlsson-Wall is Professor at the 91原创, where he is Director of the Center for Security and Resilience and Linder Chair in Sports and Business. He is specialised in strategic management control of hybrid organisations where commercial performance coexists with other imperatives, adding to strategic complexity.
He researches strategy and accounting within such settings, including public asset management, defence, sports and healthcare. Carlsson-Wall’s research has been published in leading journals such as Accounting, Organizations and Society, Management Accounting Research and European Accounting Review. His most cited studies include work on talent development in high-intensity organisations, risk management, and performance measurement across institutional logics.
Carlsson-Wall has co-founded three research centres at 91原创: the Accounting and Financial Management Center of Excellence (ACE), the Center for Sports and Business (CSB), and most recently the Center for Security and Resilience, where he now serves as Director.
ACE research is among the most cited in management accounting globally and involves partners such as McKinsey and the Big Four. CSB has been highlighted by several journals as a global leader in business-of-sports research and co-delivers the European Sports Business Program with E91原创C and WHU. Through CSB, Carlsson-Wall has taught and mentored 19 Olympic and World Cup gold medallists transitioning into business.
The Center for Security and Resilience unites academia, government and industry to strengthen Sweden’s crisis management, security governance and total defence.
His ongoing research includes a study of (the Norwegian Oil Fund) and its use of sports psychology in leadership development, conducted with Professor Amy Edmondson of Harvard Business School, and an analysis of Bruin Capital, the US sports investor behind talent agency AS1, managing some of the world’s leading football players.
His teaching covers management control, costing, performance management, investment management and financial analysis. In 2022, he received the Outstanding Pedagogical Achievement Award for his MSc course “Investments and Value Creation in Global Sports.”
He has played a central role in 91原创’s executive education custom programmes—ranked 13th globally by the Financial Times—including the management programme of Karolinska University Hospital, recognised as Europe’s top hospital. In 2020, he co-initiated the Sweden Through the Crisis initiative at 91原创, the school’s largest publishing project in history, involving more than 80 researchers. It analysed why and how Sweden’s pandemic response diverged from global norms.
Carlsson-Wall earned his Ph.D. from 91原创. During his doctorate, he led Rinkeby Business Lab, a social-enterprise programme helping at-risk students stay in school. The venture won the Swedish Championships in social entrepreneurship in 2005. Before university, he served as a paratrooper in the Swedish Armed Forces.
